Pilot shortage Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Pilot deficiency - Research Paper Example The United States needs to roll out significant improvements in the carrier business and pilot affirmation programs presently, to shield the business from the staggering impacts of this lack, and to guarantee the proceeded with dependability of aircraft travel both broadly, and universally for a considerable length of time to come. A pilot, otherwise called a pilot, is the individual in charge of an airplane during flight. As far as the security of the flight, pilots are the most fundamental single part, since they are answerable for the airplane during movement. As indicated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) business airplane are required to have two pilots in the cockpit during Air Carrier tasks, and to guarantee there is somebody who can take control during a crisis. For the most recent decades, the lack of individuals entering the field of avionics has been developing, making an eminent deficiency of pilots. There are various reasons that there are insufficient pilots to at present address America’s issue for air travel including: expanded pace of pilot retirement, diminished qualified people entering the field of flight, expanded limitations and prerequisites, and expanded interest for air travel administrations. Thus, the pilot deficiency has been a developing issue in United States flight industry, and if not settled cautiously, it is a shortfall that could prompt numerous major issues. Nonetheless, with endeavors from all pieces of flight industry, pilot deficiency is anything but a no-arrangement issue. A pilot lack is the deficiency or inadequacy of individuals qualified to effectively and legitimately work the â€Å"directional flight controls of an airplane while it is in flight† (Wikipedia, 2015). Socially, it alludes to a circumstance where America right now, or any nation, has not very many pilots presently utilized, making a circumstance where there are insufficient

The Actor Essay Example For Students

The Actor Essay Moe MinkaraThe ActorWhat is acting, who are individuals which we can name on-screen characters? Indeed we are largely entertainers. Each and every person is an on-screen character in his regular day to day existence. However acting can be partitioned into two sections relying upon an expert premise or day by day one. Inside the expert acting there are two significant classes, Imitation and the specialty of turning out to be. Impersonation, is the point at which an entertainer attempts to emulate or mirror a specific character by talking a similar way and making comparable physical signals that the character him self would typically do. However impersonating isn't sufficient in light of the fact that in spite of the fact that the entertainer emulates a character, he doesn't feel like him therefore making it difficult for the crowd to accept what they are seeing. Therefor the second most significant advance is for the entertainer to accept and to turn into the character. For him to do as such, he needs to painstakingly examine the character he wishes to act. He should concentrate each and every detail, full encapsulation, from the manner in which the on-screen character moves to the smallest tic he may have. Now and then entertainers should experience their parts, in actuality, which causes them to become accustomed to and be alright with whom they are. One of the most significant factors in acting is Virtuosity, which is in way or another to exceed expectations in at least one thing, for example, the utilization of ones voice, or body. Virtuosity draws out the brilliance in a character or essentially in an individual. The second most significant angle is enchantment that brings under it nearness, attraction, and magnetism. Enchantment is felt, and is viewed as to a greater degree an inclination or a vibe that the entertainer sends to the crowd. So as to turn out to be acceptable on-screen characters, one needs to comprehend and have the option to utilize the entertainers instrument . The on-screen characters instruments can be best portrayed as controlling ones mind and can be partitioned in two principle parts physiological and mental. The most significant factor under physiological instrument is the voice, which incorporates how to inhale, talk, task and control the numerous forces that one can control with his voice. Moreover, a nother primary factor to be considered is the physiological instrument. This instrument is utilized to control ones physical unwinding, solid control, economy of activity, and expressive rhythms and development designs. All these assistance the character keep up a demonstration or hold stage all through a whole exhibition. Creative mind and shock are significant weapons or force for an on-screen character. Helping the entertainer to carry reality and immediacy to the stage. However the most significant of everything is discipline. For the life of an entertainer is certainly not an extremely simple life to lead. They require a ton of work, fixation, and tolerance at the most dark hours of the day. They ought to be in charge of themselves and skill to manage individuals and in particular how to manage his collaborators. Being a trained entertainer doesn't mean subjection, yet the individual in question is required to realize how to function thoroughly to build up their physiological a nd mental instrument. Moreover, another significant factor is the on-screen characters approach. Under this classification, there are two customary strategies that entertainers typically follow. The first is the outer or specialized and the inside or honest. The outside technique is the point at which the entertainer carries on truly the job regardless of individual sentiments. Devotees to such an outside methodology treat the entertainers execution as a simple of reality instead of an immediate epitome of it. As opposed to this, the inside strategies center around the on-screen characters individual presumption of his character. These inside techniques will in general extend th mental components of a presentation and to help absorb the truth of the character being played. you should carry on with the life of your character in front of an audience . .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 , .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .postImageUrl , .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .focused content territory { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 , .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:hover , .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:visited , .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:active { border:0!important; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; mistiness: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:active , .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:hover { obscurity: 1; progress: murkiness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: rel ative; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content enrichment: underline; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; fringe span: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-fringe range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content embellishment: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258 .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u6dfb4b219d35dcbc66695e2029a8b258:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Chromosome Probes EssayEvery entertainer has a specific daily schedule to follow made out of three phases, the evaluating, practice, lastly the exhibition. The first is the manner in which the entertainer gets the job. The second is the manner in which the entertainer learns it. The latter is the manner in which the entertainer produces it. In trying out, it is essential for the on-screen character to feel calm with taking care of the job, expectation of conveyance, physical. Vocal, and passionate reasonableness for the job. All these with a little appeal are an absolute necessity all together for him/her to create the enchantment which is required for the job. In practicing, the on-screen character needs to learn by heart his job, and must be aquatinted with the character and attempt his/her best to typify the character so as to arrive at a definitive goal of the job. The practice time frame is a period of experimentation and disclosure. The exhibition, obviously is the prize for all that the on-screen character has experienced. However it's anything but a joke and ought to never be messed with. For a splendid practice can disintegrate before a group of people and the other way around. An entertainer should control his stage fear and let himself be removed with his exhibition with no doubts. Nearness is the most significant factor in front of an audience, and for nearness to exist, the entertainer must be sure of what he is and what he is doing in front of an audience. In particular a presentation is certifiably not a single direction articulation given from the phase to the house, it is a two way participatory correspondence between the on-screen characters and the crowd. The entertainers depict their developments and chuckles, while the crowds depict their criticism with their quietness, giggling, praise and consideration. It is fundamental to realize that an on-screen characters execution doesn't end with the play, it goes on until after the drape call and in particular the on-screen character ought to gain from one execution and utilize his procured information in his next presentation. Taking everything into account, I can say that acting is a way of life all alone. As simple as it might appear, the life of an entertainer is extremely intense and not generally as remunerating as one anticipates that it should be. A lifetime proficient vocation in acting is the objective of numerous however the achievement of not many . Theater

A Bookish Kind of Town

A Bookish Kind of Town Anytime someone mentions my hometown of Baltimore, (or Bawlmer, as some say), you probably think of The Wire or John Waters films. But if youre of the literary persuasion, you also think of H. L. Mencken, Edgar Allan Poe, Dashiell Hammett, and Adrienne Rich. And if youve spent any amount of time in Baltimore, you know that Poe is a bit of an obsession around there. An unknown fan used to leave some cognac and three roses on his grave once a year, and the citys football team is named after Poes famous poem. And yet, Poe wasnt even born in Baltimore; he just died there. Mencken, on the other hand, was a Bawlmorean through-and-through. Hes even been called the Sage of Baltimore, and the house in which he lived is a National Historic Landmark. Menckens birthday (September 12) has just passed, but I wonder how many people actually know who he was or even care. Hey, as a Baltimore native, I didnt even know much about him until I went to college. But hes always been floating around my periphery, inserting himself into my life through such favorite authors as Theodore Dreiser, Sinclair Lewis, and Anita Loos. Menckens influence on American literature during the first few decades of the 20th century through his essays, articles, and criticism was enormous. And yet, his outspokenness on controversial topics like the Scopes trial and Americas involvement in Europe during the two world wars made him a household name. However, its not that Baltimore celebrates Mencken Day, or that Dreiser and Mencken bickered like an old married couple, that greatly piqued my interest in the man. No, its the fact that my grandfather knew him. Like Mencken, my grandfather was born in September in Baltimore, but beyond that, they had little in common. Thirty-five years younger than Mencken, my grandfather was the son of Russian immigrants who owned a grocery store. After living in Pennsylvania and New York during the 1930s, he settled back down in his hometown, married my grandmother, and opened a grocery store of his own, which he called the Miracle Market. That store was several blocks away from the Baltimore Sun, where Mencken worked. Apparently, Mencken used to park in a lot that my grandfather also owned, and this was the extent of their acquaintance. Whether or not Mencken patronized his store, Ill never know. Nevertheless, when my grandfather nonchalantly mentioned that he had known Mencken, I was floored. A member of my family knowing a famous writer and critic??!! There was just one degree of separation between me and H. L. MENCKEN?? I tried to pump him for more information, but all hed say was that Mencken was a nice guy. My grandfather was a man of few words.I wish I had taken the time when my grandfather was alive to write down his stories of My grandfather in his store in 1941. Baltimore during the Great Depression and World War II, all the people who passed through his store, and his general impressions of life in a literary city. But most of all, I wish that I could have talked to him about Mencken and found out if hed ever read any of the critics essays or articles. He probably had. After all, my grandfather was proud that I studied American literature. And Im proud that I knew him as long as I did. Are you from a literary city? Tell me about it in the comments! _________________________ Sign up for our newsletter to have the best of Book Riot delivered straight to your inbox every two weeks. No spam. We promise. Luminescence Dating in Archaeology

Luminescence dating (including thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence) is a type of dating methodology that measures the amount of light emitted from energy stored in certain rock types and derived soils to obtain an absolute date for a specific event that occurred in the past. The method is a direct dating technique, meaning that the amount of energy emitted is a direct result of the event being measured. Better still, unlike radiocarbon dating, the effect luminescence dating measures increases with time. As a result, there is no upper date limit set by the sensitivity of the method itself, although other factors may limit the methods feasibility. How Luminescence Dating Works Two forms of luminescence dating are used by archaeologists to date events in the past: thermoluminescence (TL) or thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL), which measures energy emitted after an object has been exposed to temperatures between 400 and 500 °C; and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), which measures energy emitted after an object has been exposed to daylight. To put it simply, certain minerals (quartz, feldspar, and calcite), store energy from the sun at a known rate. This energy is lodged in the imperfect lattices of the minerals crystals. Heating these crystals (such as when a pottery vessel is fired or when rocks are heated) empties the stored energy, after which time the mineral begins absorbing energy again. TL dating is a matter of comparing the energy stored in a crystal to what ought to be there, thereby coming up with a date-of-last-heated. In the same way, more or less, OSL (optically stimulated luminescence) dating measures the last time an object was exposed to sunlight. Luminescence dating is good for between a few hundred to (at least) several hundred thousand years, making it much more useful than carbon dating. The Meaning of Luminescence The term luminescence refers to the energy emitted as light from minerals such as quartz and feldspar after theyve been exposed to an ionizing radiation of some sort. Minerals—and, in fact, everything on our planet—are exposed to cosmic radiation: luminescence dating takes advantage of the fact that certain minerals both collect and release energy from that radiation under specific conditions. Two forms of luminescence dating are used by archaeologists to date events in the past: thermoluminescence (TL) or thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL), which measures energy emitted after an object has been exposed to temperatures between 400 and 500 °C; and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), which measures energy emitted after an object has been exposed to daylight. Crystalline rock types and soils collect energy from the radioactive decay of cosmic uranium, thorium, and potassium-40. Electrons from these substances get trapped in the minerals crystalline structure, and continuing exposure of the rocks to these elements over time leads to predictable increases in the number of electrons caught in the matrices. But when the rock is exposed to high enough levels of heat or light, that exposure causes vibrations in the mineral lattices and the trapped electrons are freed. The exposure to radioactive elements continues, and the minerals begin again storing free electrons in their structures. If you can measure the rate of acquisition of the stored energy, you can figure out how long it has been since the exposure happened. Materials of geological origin will have absorbed considerable quantities of radiation since their formation, so any human-caused exposure to heat or light will reset the luminescence clock considerably more recently than that  since only the energy stored since the event will be recorded. Measuring Stored Energy The way you measure energy stored in an object that you expect has been exposed to heat or light in the past  is to stimulate that object again  and measure the amount of energy released. The energy released by stimulating the crystals is expressed in light (luminescence). The intensity of blue, green or infrared light that is created when an object is stimulated is proportional to the number of electrons stored in the minerals structure and, in turn, those light units are converted to dose units. The equations used by scholars to determine the date when the last exposure happened are typically: Age total luminescence/annual rate of luminescence acquisition, orAge paleodose (De)/annual dose(DT) Where De  is the laboratory beta dose that induces the same luminescence intensity in the sample emitted by the natural sample, and DT  is the annual dose rate comprised of several components of radiation that arise in the decay of natural radioactive elements. Datable Events and Objects Artifacts which can be dated using these methods include  ceramics, burned  lithics, burned bricks and soil from  hearths  (TL), and unburned stone surfaces that were exposed to light and then buried (OSL). Pottery: The most recent heating measured in pottery sherds is assumed to represent the manufacturing event; the signal arises from quartz or feldspar in the clay or other tempering additives. Although pottery vessels can be exposed to heat during cooking, cooking is never at sufficient levels to reset the luminescence clock. TL dating was used to determine the age of  Indus Valley  civilization occupations, which had proved resistant to radiocarbon dating, because of the local climate. Luminescence can also be used to determine the original firing temperature.Lithics: Raw material such as flints and cherts have been dated by TL; fire-cracked rock from hearths can also be dated by TL as long as they were fired to sufficiently high temperatures. The resetting mechanism is primarily heated  and works on the assumption that the raw stone material was heat-treated during stone tool manufacture. However, heat treatment normally involves temperatures between 300 and 400 °C, not alw ays sufficiently high enough. The best success from TL dates on chipped stone artifacts likely are from events when they were deposited into a hearth and accidentally fired.Surfaces of buildings and walls: The buried elements of standing walls of archaeological ruins have been dated using optically stimulated luminescence; the derived date provides the age of burial of the surface. In other words, the OSL date on a foundation wall of a building is the last time that foundation was exposed to light before being used as the initial layers in a building, and hence when the building was first built.Others: Some success has been found dating objects such as bone tools, bricks, mortar, mounds, and agricultural terraces. Ancient slag  left from early  metal production  have also been dated using TL, as well as absolute dating of kiln fragments or vitrified linings of furnaces and crucibles. Geologists have used OSL and TL to establish long, log chronologies of landscapes; luminescence dating is a powerful tool to help date sentiments dated to the  Quaternary  and much earlier periods. History of the Science Thermoluminescence was first clearly described in a paper presented to the Royal Society (of Britain) in 1663, by  Robert Boyle, who described the effect in a diamond which had been warmed to body temperature. The possibility of making use of TL stored in a mineral or pottery sample was first proposed by chemist  Farrington Daniels  in the 1950s. During the 1960s and 70s, the  Oxford University Research Laboratory for Archaeology and History of Art  led in the development of TL as a method of dating archaeological materials. Propelling the Salvation Army Towards Success free essay sample

In light of the massive adverse publicity surrounding non-profit organizations and charities, the key objective of the Salvation Army (â€Å"the Army†) in the coming years is to increase public confidence. Increasing public confidence arguably leads to increase in public donations that will allow the Army to extend its reach to more needy people in Singapore. This calls for a major overhaul in the Army’s organisation strategy, as new strategies need to be formulated to rise to the challenges of the turbulent environment. An organizational change is expected of the Army and the communication of change represents the key to a successful implementation of the new corporate strategy. Engaged to engineer the change, our consulting team will orchestrate the process in four stages. Firstly, we scrutinize the external environment in which the Army operates in and identify the key threats and opportunities in the near future. Next, we would perform a critical strategic analysis of the Army’s existing strategic framework and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses against the environmental threats and opportunities. We will write a custom essay sample on Propelling the Salvation Army Towards Success or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Subsequently, we will propose changes to its strategic framework to better minimize the threats and capitalize on the opportunities. Lastly, we recommend the use of the Balanced Scorecard as a strategy management system to communicate the organizational change and execute its strategies. Designed by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton, the Balanced Scorecard has been used by many profit-maximizing organizations and received spectacular success. As a strategic management tool that aligns employees to organizational goals and objectives, the BSC is equally applicable in the context of a charitable organisation. We espoused that if the pitfalls are cautiously avoided and the difficulties circumvented, the benefits brought about by the BSC will outweigh the cost of implementation. Careful use of the BSC will propel The Salvation Army towards sustainable success. The Salvation Army is a worldwide non-profit organization that provides social aid to the poor, destitute and hungry with the intention of bringing the message Christian Salvation to the world with no discrimination towards any race or religion. With its operations spanning globally, the Army has employed a highly de-centralized organisation design to better cater to local needs. While the London Headquarter provides guidance, the operations are run predominantly by a selected group of passionate local citizens. In Singapore, the Army provides social aid through its churches (corps) and a wide range of social and community programmes. The range of aid provided includes child care centres, children homes, personal development programmes for secondary school students, youth development centres, tuition centres, corps community services, family support services, elderly care, nursing homes and rehabilitation centres, prison-support ministries and services. The accounting scandals of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) took the Singapore public by storm. There was huge media coverage about the impropriety of usage of funds and the management was unable to account for the money received and spent. In a spate of scandals about charitable organizations hitting Singapore, public confidence towards these charitable organizations took a huge plunge. The need for the Army to improve its image and to adopt a new strategy is imminent in order to deliver its objectives continuously. These lessons are critical to the future success of The Army. †¢Transparency in Operations Consequent to the decreased public confidence, the public has become more careful in selecting the organizations they donate to. While it is uncertain as to the motivation of philanthropic acts by individuals, there is a healthy desire for more transparency about public funded activities. [Gallagher and Weinberg, 1991] This suggests that the more transparent the charitable organisation is, the more individuals are willing to donate to that charitable organisation. Corporate Governance The second lesson that can be drawn is the importance of good corporate governance practices in charitable organizations. Governance in the charity sector refers to the systems and processes concerned with ensuring the overall direction, effectiveness, supervision and accountability of an organisation. [CGC IPC, 2007] Charities are for the benefit of people by the people, it is just a form of organizing and making sure that the resources in cash or in-kind are being directed to those in need. Therefore, it is imperative that the charitable organisation be accountable to the public as to where the funds are directed and how they are allocated. Good corporate governance is fast becoming an important criterion for the public in deciding whether to donate to a charitable organisation and even a more important factor for volunteers when choosing which charitable organisation to volunteer at. To achieve this, the Army’s Board is entrusted with the responsibility to ensure that there is good governance in the company to build the firm foundation for maintaining clear accounting and high public awareness and trust. This also contributes towards performance indicators and operational structures. †¢Corporate Culture Corporate culture is perhaps the most vital towards promoting ethics in a company. Having a corporate culture that emphasizes ethical behaviors provide great boost to public confidence. Consequent to the NKF Saga, we have seen how the employees of NKF decided against blowing the whistle on their superiors despite being aware of the fraudulent practices of the upper management. This ill culture where unethical behaviour is condoned has brought down an otherwise successful and good-intentioned organisation. Our consulting team will perform a critical review on the Army’s existing strategies and tactics and propose changes to lift the Army out of the current situation through boosting public confidence and ultimately increase their donation funds to deliver its intended objectives. Subsequently, we propose the use of Balanced Scorecard (â€Å"BSC†) to implement the pro posed strategies and tactics in view of its success in the corporate world.

America’s New Free Trade Agreement Essay Example

America’s New Free Trade Agreement Essay Example America’s New Free Trade Agreement Essay America’s New Free Trade Agreement Essay The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), implemented in the year 1994, is meant to remove barriers to trade between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. An important component of this free trade agreement is the member countries’ concern for environmental as well as labor issues, which must be worked on and agreed upon by the member countries. Yet another significant component of NAFTA is that of conflict resolution between the member nations. For this, the free trade agreement outlines procedures (Topulos).Since the time that it was first implemented, NAFTA has proved to be a positive experience for all member countries. In Mexico after NAFTA, poverty rates were reduced, and the real income increased, despite the economic crisis that the country went through during 1994-1995. Experts believe that the free trade agreement has the potential to reduce the poverty of Mexico even further. Trade among member nations has already increased tremendously. Goods produced in the United States, Canada or Mexico, are now distributed simultaneously in all three member countries. Moreover, the Mexican factories that process imported raw materials into finished goods for export have seen a dramatic increase in their income. Trade in other sectors of the Mexican economy has also increased. In the area of agriculture, Mexico has witnessed a steady increase in exports every year since the inception of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreeme nt). Undoubtedly, NAFTA is expected to benefit Mexico also in the future, just as the benefits of the agreement are being realized more fully today by the United States and Canada. The latter are expected to still increase their benefits of NAFTA with Mexico’s economic development.Given the benefits of NAFTA to the economies of the member countries, and the faith of the United States that it should have firm economic relationships with its neighbors – in December 2003, the United States, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua completed their negotiations on the newest free trade agreement in the region: the Central American Free Trade Agreement or CAFTA (Promoting Trade With Central America And The Dominican Republic). The United States and Costa Rica agreed on the latter’s participation in the new free trade agreement in January 2004. Two months later, the United States concluded negotiations also with the Dominican Republic to integrate the latter int o the CAFTA. This changed the name of CAFTA to DR-CAFTA, or the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (Costa Rica). The goal of DR-CAFTA was the establishment of a free trade zone, which would be similar to the NAFTA. Thus, the DR-CAFTA removes tarrifs on approximately 80 percent of the U.S. exports to the other member countries (Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement). By so doing, the new free trade agreement makes it especially beneficial for member countries that are economically weak to buy high quality U.S. products and thereby raise their standards of living. What is more, the agreement allows for easy access of goods from member countries into the United States market. Once again, the economically weak member countries are bound to benefit substantially through the new agreement, seeing that they may now have the gigantic U.S. market to sell their products to (Runyon).Other provisions of the DR-CAFTA include: (1) a promise made by the govern ments of all member countries that foreign investment is guaranteed in their respective nations; (2) a gradual removal of all barriers to trade that were initially meant to protect domestic production; (3) no duties on the import of agricultural goods; (4) subsidies on all agricultural goods, except sugar, must be eliminated; (5) intellectual property rights must be maintained; (6) a gradual removal of protectionist barriers in all sectors; (7) national monopolies must be dismantled so as to allow foreign investments to compete equally with the domestic organizations; (8) transnational companies would be given the right to resolve conflicts in private international courts; (9) the environment must be respected, and environmental laws abided by; (10) the major labor standards of the International Labor Organization must be enforced in all member countries; and (11) government corruption must be reduced and eventually eliminated in all member countries, especially the economically wea k ones where corruption is rampant (Dominican Republic). The United States’ economy would benefit by selling tariff-free goods to the member countries of the DR-CAFTA. The DR-CAFTA states would be able to purchase more U.S. goods than before, seeing as the tariffs would have been lifted. It is worthy of note, however, that the combined GDP of the DR-CAFTA states is only 0.5 percent of the GDP of the United States. The quantity of U.S. goods that the DR-CAFTA states would be able to purchase would be limited but naturally. Still, the benefits that these states achieve in the long run through the DR-CAFTA are expected to be greater than the benefits that the United States would be able to realize. This is because the DR-CAFTA states are all economically weaker than the U.S. Thus, positive changes manifested in the economically weak states would appear to be much greater in extent (Runyon).Although the effects of the new free trade agreement between the United States, Dominican R epublic, and five Central American countries, have not been documented as yet, it is believed that once the DR-CAFTA has been fully implemented, the United States would be able to increase its exports to the member countries by approximately 15 percent. U.S. imports are similarly expected to increase by around 12 percent, while the effect on the aggregate output as well as employment in the United States is expected to be little. Hornbeck states: These estimates are in line with expectations made prior to the negotiations that the marginal effects of the DR-CAFTA would be small, but positive for the U.S. economy as a whole, given the DR-CAFTA countries had small and already largely open economies.Once again, the overall benefits of DR-CAFTA would be more clearly visible in the DR-CAFTA states in the long run, just as the case of Mexico and NAFTA reveals greater interest in the benefits of NAFTA to Mexico. Just as NAFTA reduced poverty rates in Mexico, increased trade in the DR-CAFTA nations is expected to reduce poverty rates in these nations. However, it may take a while before the full benefits of DR-CAFTA are realized in these nations. Molly Runyon explains why the full range of benefits of DR-CAFTA would not be immediately visible in the economically weak nations: 1. Costa Rica. How Plants Animals Alter the Planets Surface

How Plants Animals Alter the Planet's Surface One of the agents of organic weathering, bioturbation is the disturbance of the soil or sediment by living things. It may include displacing soil by plant roots, digging by burrowing animals (such as ants or rodents), pushing sediment aside (such as in animal tracks), or eating and excreting sediment, as earthworms do. Bioturbation aids the penetration of air and water and loosens sediment to promote winnowing or washing (transportation). How Bioturbation Works Under ideal circumstances, sedimentary rock is formed in predictable layers. Sediments bits of soil, rock, and organic matter collect on the surface of the land or at the bottom of rivers and oceans. Over time, these sediments are compressed to the point of which they form rock. This process is called lithification. Layers of sedimentary rock may be seen in many geological structures. Geologists are able to determine the age and composition of sedimentary rock based on the materials included in the sediment and the level at which the rock lies. In general, older layers of sedimentary rocks lie under newer layers. Organic matter and fossils that make up the sediments also provide clues to the age of the rock. Natural processes can disturb the regular layering of sedimentary rock. Volcanoes and earthquakes can disturb layers by forcing older rock closer to the surface and newer rock deeper into the Earth. But it doesnt take a powerful tectonic event to disturb sedimentary layers. Organisms and plants are constantly shifting and changing Earths sediments. Burrowing animals and the actions of plant roots are two sources of bioturbation. Since bioturbation is so common, sedimentary rocks are divided into three groups that describe their level of bioturbation: Burrowed rock is filled with evidence of organisms, and may contain elements from several different sedimentary layers.Laminated rock shows evidence of bioturbation at the surface caused by nons include furrows and tracks created by aquatic or terrestrial animals. The massive rock contains sediments from just a single layer. Examples of Bioturbation   Bioturbation occurs in many different environments and at several different levels. For example: Earthworms digging through soil can shift older materials to higher layers. They can also leave behind traces of their activity in the form of fecal matter which, over time, lithifies.Burrowing marine animals such as crabs, clams, and shrimp, can radically change sedimentary layers. These animals burrow into the sand, creating tunnels and moving materials from one sedimentary layer to another. If the tunnels are sturdy enough, they may later be filled with material formed at a later time.Tree roots often run through multiple layers of soil. As they grow, they may disturb or mix sediments. When they fall, they pull older materials to the surface. Significance of Bioturbation Bioturbation provides researchers with information about sediments, and thus about the geology and history of the sediments and the area. For example: Bioturbation can suggest that a particular area is likely to be rich in petroleum or other natural resources;Bioturbation can provide clues to ancient life in the form of fossilized animal and plant remains;Bioturbation can provide information about life cycles, dietary habits, and migration patterns of contemporary organisms.

Project Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 14

Project Management - Essay Example The starting point is where the concept of a project is developed, a core concept to begin the project with. Ending time is where the project is finalized after meeting up all of its planned objectives. In case of uncompleted project, project is being terminated. 3. Unique deliverable: producing some deliverables is the aim of every project. These deliverables look into the need or problem related to a project before its execution. Every project is done or made to get the results. 4. Progressive Elaboration: when a certain project is being done then, continuous improvements and investigations related to a project also becomes the part of it. This investigation and improvements leads towards an accuracy of a project. For an example: in the project of agriculture, the increase in the production and marketing might be done on the basis of provision of water. Water would be the second priority once the agriculture parts are well under way. 7. Management of a project: this characteristic deals with the planning, controlling and execution of a project. It ensures that the project’s delivery is successfully being done on time. These are basically the objectives and strategies in association of a project. Management of a project also strengthens the company’s management, minimizes the factor of risk and accomplishes the changes in association with the company’s

What this country (US),state or school needs more than anything else Essay

What this country (US),state or school needs more than anything else - Essay Example The gravest threat our country is facing lies to the turning point of extremism and technology. Our rivals have candidly acknowledged that they are in a quest for weapons of mass demolition, and evidence shows that they are doing so with fortitude. The United States will not let these efforts be successful. We will assemble our defenses in opposition to ballistic missiles and other ways of delivery. We will work together with other nations to refute, contain, and restrain our enemies’ hard work to acquire treacherous technologies. We will also augment our self-defense; our country will act using all ways against all forms of intimidation in time before they are wholly formed. We should be ready to crush all our enemies’ plans; we will use the best astuteness and proceed with consideration. If we will not do our best, history will criticize those who saw this approaching danger but failed to take action. In the new globe we inhabit, the only course to peace and defense i s the path prompt action. The unfolding upheaval over the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear aspirations, and the subsequent steps presented to the United States in dealing with this dispute is a debate that has taken a long period of time to conclude. With the exception of Iraq, no other disaster today so bedevils American policy makers, for a long period this case has provided the international community with irrefutable proof that the Iranian regime is pursuing a massive, multi-faceted endeavor, and in spite of United Nations censure (Kerr 37). In and of itself, the possibility of the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism acquiring the world’s most dangerous technology will be deeply troubling. These weapons, if manufactured can lead to both the mass destruction of property and loss of lives. Among the solutions to this issue are; military action that is deeply problematic. The use of force on Iran’s nuclear

The Functions of Beta Carotene

The Functions of Beta Carotene Unlike supplements, foods rich in beta-carotene pose no lung cancer risk. Synthetic beta-carotene supplements have been found to increase the risk of both colorectal and lung cancer in smokers, especially those who also drink alcohol. A study published by an international team in the January 2004 issue of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention indicates that beta-carotene consumed as part of whole foods has no such negative effects. This study, which pooled data from seven large cohort studies running between 7 and 16 years and involving a subject population of 399,765 participants in North America and Europe, found that beta-carotene from foods was not associated with any increased risk of lung cancer among current smokers or non-smokers. Other carotenoids in foods (lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene) were also found to have no association with lung cancer risk. (February 26, 2004) Food sources of beta-carotene include sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, turnip greens, winter squash, collard greens, cilantro and fresh thyme. To maximize the availability of the carotenoids in the foods listed above, the foods should be eaten raw or steamed lightly. For serving size for specific foods, see Nutrient Rating Chart below at the bottom of this page. Content (Jump to) Description Function Deficiency Symptoms Toxicity Symptoms Cooking, storage and processing Factors that affect function Drug-nutrient interaction Nutrient interaction Health conditions Supplements Food Sources Recommendations Description What is beta-carotene? Beta-carotene is probably the most well known of the carotenoids, a phytonutrients family that represents of the one most widespread groups of naturally occurring pigments. It is one of the most abundant carotenoids in the North American diet as well as one of approximately 50 carotenoids known as provitamin Acompounds, able to be converted in the body into retinol, an active form of vitamin A. While beta-carotene produces colors in the orange and yellow range, beta-carotene rich foods may be other colors besides from these two. That is because other phytonutrients pigments blend together with the beta-carotene to give the plant food its unique hue that, in addition to orange or yellow, could be other colors including pink, red or white. How it Functions What are the functions of beta-carotene? Preventing Vitamin A Deficiency Until late in the 20th Century, the functions of carotenoids, including beta-carotene, were discussed only in terms of their potential vitamin A activity. Beta-carotene is one of approximately 50 carotenoids of the known 600, that are called provitamin A compounds because the body can convert them into retinol, an active form of vitamin A. As a result, foods that contain beta-carotene can help prevent vitamin A deficiency. In addition to alpha-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, beta-carotene is among the most commonly consumed provitamin A carotenoids in the North American diet. Antioxidant Immune-Enhancing Activity In recent years, carotenoids including beta-carotene have received a tremendous amount of attention as potential anti-cancer and anti-aging compounds. Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant, protecting the cells of the body from damage caused by free radicals. It is also one of the carotenoids believed to enhance the function of the immune system. Promoting Proper Cell Communication In addition to their antioxidant and immune-enhancing activity, carotenoids including beta-carotene have shown the ability to stimulate cell to cell communication. Researchers now believe that poor communication between cells may be one of the causes of the overgrowth of cells, a condition which eventually leads to cancer. By promoting proper communication between cells, carotenoids may play a role in cancer prevention. Supporting Reproductive Health It is also believed that beta-carotene may participate in female reproduction. Although its exact function in female reproduction has not yet been identified, it is known that the corpus luteum has the highest concentration of beta-carotene of any organ in the body, suggesting that this nutrient plays an important role in reproductive processes. Deficiency Symptoms What are deficiency symptoms for beta-carotene? A low dietary intake of carotenoids such as beta-carotene is not known to directly cause any diseases or health conditions, at least in the short term. However, if your intake of vitamin A is also low, a dietary deficiency of beta-carotene and/or other provitamin A carotenoids can cause the symptoms associated with vitamin A deficiency. In addition, long-term inadequate intake of carotenoids is associated with chronic disease, including heart disease and various cancers. One important mechanism for this carotenoid-disease relationship appears to be free radicals. Research indicates that diets low in beta-carotene and carotenoids can increase the bodys susceptibility to damage from free radicals. As a result, over the long term, beta-carotene deficient diets may increase tissue damage from free radical activity, and increase risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancers. Toxicity Symptoms What are toxicity symptoms for beta-carotene? A tell-tale sign of excessive consumption of beta-carotene is a yellowish discoloration of the skin, most often occurring in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. This condition is called carotenodermia, and is reversible and harmless. High intake of carotenoid-containing foods or supplements is not associated with any toxic side effects. As a result, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences did not establish a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for carotenoids when it reviewed these compounds in 2000. However, the results of two research studies indicate that those who smoke heavily and drink alcohol regularly, may increase their chance of developing lung cancer and/or heart disease if they take beta-carotene supplements in amounts greater than 20-30 milligrams per day. Impact of Cooking, Storage and Processing How do cooking, storage, or processing affect beta-carotene? In certain cases, cooking can improve the availability of carotenoids in foods. Lightly steaming carrots and spinach improves your bodys ability to absorb carotenoids in these foods. It is important to note, however, that in most cases, prolonged cooking of vegetables decreases the availability of carotenoids by changing the shape of the carotenoid from its natural trans-configuration to a cis-configuration. For example, fresh carrots contain 100% all-trans beta-carotene, while canned carrots contain only 73% all-trans beta-carotene. Factors that Affect Function What factors might contribute to a deficiency of beta-carotene? Carotenoids are fat-soluble substances, and as such require the presence of dietary fat for proper absorption through the digestive tract. Consequently, your carotenoid status may be impaired by a diet that is extremely low in fat or if you have a medical condition that causes a reduction in the ability to absorb dietary fat such as pancreatic enzyme deficiency, Crohns disease, celiac sprue, cystic fibrosis, surgical removal of part or all of the stomach, gall bladder disease, and liver disease. Due to low consumption of fruits and vegetables, many adolescents and young adults do not take in enough beta-carotene. In addition, if you smoke cigarettes and/or drink alcohol, you may have lower than normal blood levels of beta-carotene. Statistically speaking, smokers and drinkers eat fewer foods that contain carotenoids such as beta-carotene. Also, researchers suspect that cigarette smoke destroys carotenoids. However, if you do smoke or drink, use carotenoid supplements with caution (see Toxicity section). Drug-Nutrient Interactions What medications affect beta-carotene? The cholesterol-lowering medications referred to as bile acid sequestrants (Cholestyramine, Colestipol, and Colestid) lower blood levels of carotenoids. In addition, margarines enriched with plant sterols such as Benecol and Take Control, may decrease the absorption of carotenoids. Olestra, a fat substitute added to snack foods, may also decrease the absorption of carotenoids. Nutrient Interactions How do other nutrients interact with beta-carotene? Beta-carotene supplements reduce blood levels of lutein while they may also increase blood levels of beta-cryptoxanthin. Supplementing your diet with pectin may decrease the absorption of carotenoids. Health Conditions Carotenoids may play a role in the prevention of the following health conditions: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Age-related macular degeneration Angina pectoris Asthma Cataracts Cervical cancer Cervical dysplasia Chlamydial infection Heart disease Laryngeal cancer (cancer of the larynx) Lung cancer Male and female infertility Osteoarthritis Photosensitivity Pneumonia Prostate cancer Rheumatoid arthritis Skin cancer Vaginal candidiasis Form in Dietary Supplements What forms of beta-carotene are found in dietary supplements? In dietary supplements, beta-carotene is available as synthetic all-trans beta-carotene, beta- and alpha-carotene from the algae Dunaliella, and mixed carotenes from palm oil. It is important to note, however, that, due to the inconsistent results from research studies aimed at evaluating the health benefits of beta-carotene supplements, the National Academy of Sciences cautions against taking high dose carotenoid supplements, except as a method for preventing vitamin A deficiency. Food Sources What foods provide beta-carotene? Beta-carotene can be found in concentrated amounts in a variety of foods including sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, turnip greens, winter squash, collard greens, cilantro, fresh thyme, cantaloupe, romaine lettuce and broccoli. Food Source Analysis not Available for this Nutrient Public Health Recommendations What are current public health recommendations for beta-carotene and carotenoids? To date, no recommended dietary intake levels have been established for carotenoids. In an effort to set such recommendations, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences reviewed the existing scientific research on carotenoids in 2000. Despite the large body of population-based research that links high consumption of foods containing beta-carotene and other carotenoids with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases, the Institute of Medicine concluded that this evidence was not strong enough to support a required carotenoid intake level because it is not yet known if the health benefits associated with carotenoid-containing foods are due to the carotenoids or to some other substance in the food. However, the National Academy of Sciences supports the recommendations of various health agencies, which encourage individuals to consume five or more servings of fruits and vegetable every day. This level of intake of fruits and vegetables provides approximately three to six milligrams of beta-carotene.

Graphical user interface Essay

1. Introduction Piso Net is basically a merge of PC rental and Arcade rental services wherein customers can pay the services by inserting coins to the machine. This machine has been making quite a buzz in the city since early 2010, but it’s not only until recently that the enterprise got the attention of business-minded folks. Piso Net is indeed a viable source of extra income especially in an area occupied by many people who are possible customers of this kind of business. However, there is a problem that the researchers observed with the Piso Net industry concerning the lack of tracking and monitoring of the total income per Piso Net machine. Unlike the typical internet cafes out there, they have cyber cafe software that enables an internet cafe business of any size to track and monitor customers, billing and of course their income. Consequently, the researchers are trying to aid this problem by developing a kind of system that would help small businessmen to track and monitor their income. This system is obtainable, practicable, simple and very easy to use that even the non computer literate users can operate it. Also, the files on income are very organized that you can track any record of it in any day, month or even year. As stated above, the system’s graphical user interface is user friendly. This system will surely help businessmen in obtaining precise, accurate and organized files. There is no internet connection required for this system to run. Its security and reliability is very good since the unauthorized personnel are not allowed to use and alter the data that are recorded. 2. Statement of the problem The lack of monitoring and tracking the income of a Piso Net machine has been the problem observed by the researchers. So in order to aid this problem, there is a need to develop a system that would help small businessmen of Piso Net. Through this system, the businessmen will know what and where his/her income is. Also, businessmen will have accurate, precise  and organized files of their income so it will make the business more productive. The system will do all work with regards to monitoring and tracking of income and that makes the business more beneficial. 3. Objective of the study Aiding the observed problem by developing a system that would help small businessmen is the main objective. Through this system the owners will have an efficient and organized income records. This system would probably solve the dilemma of the Piso Net machine owners. 4. Scope and Limitations The researchers just focused on the monitoring and tracking of income per Piso Net machine so the system will be on the calculation of the monthly and yearly total income. The system will also display the expenses regarding extra services like printing and overnight rents. All rental transactions such as PC per PC rental rates are not included only the total income regarding that month and year is accounted. The United States Educational System - 1072 Words

A good way to become and stay a valuable member of the United States is to get an education. While this is not named in the Constitution, it is an essential part in becoming an informed and productive US citizen. This is because education is not only one of the key components used to creating the United States; it is also what has been used for millenniums in order to build great and prosperous civilizations such as: The Roman Empire, The French Republic, Great Britain, The Kingdom of Spain, etc. An extraordinary educational system allowed these sophisticated cultures to transform from a dream into the historical innovators. Sadly, The United States educational system is in trouble. Today, our nation is ranked 36th in the world. In the US in 2010, 74% of students in American high schools graduated and received their hig h school diplomas. If the other 16% or 1.3 million students had graduated that year, the nation would have seen $337 billion more in earnings throughout those students’ lifetimes. The problem is not only those 16%, but also the education of much of the graduating 74%. The problem is High schools are not preparing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel after graduation. Some of the failures that accompany US education are the fact that: only 1 in 4 high school students graduate college-ready in the 4 core subjects of English, Reading, Math and Science. Since 1983, over 10 million Americans have reached the 12th grade without having learned to read at a basic level. Over 20 million have reached their senior year unable to do basic math. Almost 25 million have reached 12th grade not knowing the essentials of U.S. history. American 12th graders also rank 19th out of 21 industrialized countries in mathematics achievement and 16th out of 21 nations in science. Ou r advanced physics students rank dead last. The low ability that is represented by American high school students is many times because of the quality of the teachers who are educating these students. In the U.S., 14% of new

The American Economy in the 1920’s Was a Bubble Destined to Burst Free Essays

â€Å"The Economy of 1920’s America was a bubble destined to burst† The statement that the economy of 1920’s American was a bubble destined to burst is thoroughly correct. The uprising issues of Protectionism, weak industries, weak banks, overproduction of goods and an uneven distribution of wealth meant that America was in a vicious spending spree that could only be broken by the 1929 Wall Street Crash. When one thinks of an economic depression, one first considers the banks and how they were linked to the said crash. We will write a custom essay sample on The American Economy in the 1920’s Was a Bubble Destined to Burst or any similar topic only for you Order Now The banks in the case of the Depression were closely related to the Wall Street Crash. In the 1920’s banks weren’t the large networks that they are today, so when they went bankrupt, there was nothing to fall back on. Banks had also loaned out far too much money keep a stable economic flow. Many Americans also decided to join in on the share market game in hopes of living out the American Dream in a â€Å"get rich quick† manner and were borrowing huge amounts of money to invest, often in an uneducated manner. As this was continuing, banks were making it possible to borrow huge sums of money and the government, still stuck in its belief of Laisseize Fare- that is, that the government would simply let the economy sort itself out without any government intervention. With this flimsy and unstable system of banking- there was bound to be a huge economic impact such as the crash. After the atrocities of World War 1, America decided it’s safest way to keep out of global issues and wars was to focus on being a self-serving country run on the idea of Protectionism. The key act of Protectionism was that tariffs were placed on imported goods, thus making American products much more appealing to its citizens. This also created a huge economic flowing acting almost exclusively nationally. However the notion of Protectionism became detrimental to America as 23 countries soon placed tariffs on American exports that were already seen as luxuries by other countries. It could be said that most other long term causes of the crash of the American economy simply snowballed off the issue of protectionism. One of the largest of these was over production. As American export rates came down, the country was met with the newfound issue of overproduction. As sales for products such as cars dropped dramatically (how many new cars could one family need? ) America still did not stop making them. There were now warehouses full of products that were either un-wanted or that couldn’t be afforded. Soon enough, many companies began to close down in a domino ffect, leaving only the products necessary to live as a profitable part of the economy. The issue of overproduction is closely linked to the un-even distribution of wealth in America. As there were only a select few who could afford to buy the luxury items companies were trying to sell, and because of the tariffs now placed on American goods, there were no exports. As 5% of the country’s population held a massive 30% of the wealth, that too was far too unstable to continue. Thus proving that the American economy was in fact, a bubble destined to burst. The final factors of the economic crash of 1929 are closely linked. The cotton, farming and railroad industries being far weaker than they seemed and the instant panic when there was any cause for concern by the American people were both such issues because of lassiz fare and the conservative government not being willing to back down on this that the economy ended up in a crisis. There were low wages for people industrial workers and farmers- (ironically enough the jobs that could have saved the economy) yet Americans were encouraged to have the highest faith in the farming, cotton and railroad industries. In 1929- the year of the crash, President Hoover himself said that America could expect a â€Å"financial triumph over property†. It was due to this huge faith and over confidence in the economy that the panic when things went a little haywire Americans were in such shock that all they wanted to do was sell their shares and get their money back. This of course was just making matters worse for themselves and their country. It is because of these factors, that it is indeed obvious that America in the 1920’s was simply a bubble destined to burst. There were too many half-thought-out ideas put into immediate motion and the lack of communication or assistance from the American government lead to the three factors that made the American crash inevitable. Mozart free essay sample

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was not only one of the greatest composers of the Classical period, but one of the greatest of all time. Surprisingly, he is not identified with radical formal or harmonic innovations, or with the profound kind of symbolism heard in some of Bachs works. Mozart best music has a natural flow and irresistible charm, and can express humor, Joy or sorrow with both conviction and mastery. His operas, especially his later efforts, are brilliant examples of high art, as are many of his piano concertos and later symphonies.Even his lesser compositions and Juvenile works feature much attractive and often masterful music. Mozart was the last of seven children, of whom five did not survive early childhood. By the age of three he was playing the clavichord, and at four he began writing short compositions, Young Wolfgang gave his first public performance at the age of five at Salisbury university, and in January, 1762, he performed on harpsichord for the Elector of Bavaria. The more obvious, related tonalities for a work in Major would be D and E major, the subdivision and dominant keys, and F# minor, the relative minor key. This type of harmonic device gives a strong sense featured from the safety and stability of the home key, making Its eventuality In the recapitulation stronger and more satisfying. This passage also shows examples bombasts innovative orchestration: the small group-large group contrast pearlier concertos becomes a three-way interchange, tit piano, winds industries forming three groups which are united and contrasted in a range factionalism. Conclusion Mozart innovations took dashboard concerto to a new level, and give some indication of why the forename so popular with composers and the public. For the composer, working paternoster changing, away from the often creatively restrictive nature of patronage an environment of more freedom, with composers having more control performances as events J C Bach is a particularly good example of this. Watchman composers also being gifted performers, who could attract audiences by woof their virtuosity, the concerto offered scope to write exciting, egalitarianisms within the context of a major work, giving their performances realistic. Yet the economic reality was domination depended on the success of concerts and range of Viennese listeners, writing of his 3 concertos written for the 1782-3 season: There are passages here and there from housemistresses alone can derive satisfaction, but they are written so that then-connoisseurs cannot fail to be pleased even if they dont know why. Quoted by Steinberg 1998: 279) aging the above into account, its surely not insignificant that Mozart piano concertos are, 200 years afterbirth composition, enjoyed by a huge audience and also highly regarded functionalists. Ere development of the subcontracted in the 18th century demonstrates how changes in the coalescences and innovations in instrument technology planted the seeds of vibrant music indu stry. This helped set up the piano concerto to become indispensable ingredient in the concert hall and a contributing factor in developments of the virtuoso in the 19th century and beyond.

Marine Pollution Essay Example

Marine Pollution Paper In the late 1 sass and early 1 sass, there were several controversies about dumping radioactive waste off the coasts of the United States by companies licensed by the Atomic Energy Commission, into the Irish Sea from the British processing facility at Windscreen, and into the Mediterranean Sea by the French Commissariat lingerie Atomize. After the Mediterranean Sea controversy, for example, Jacques Coaster became a worldwide figure in the campaign to stop marine pollution. Marine pollution made further international headlines after the 1967 crash of the oil tanker Torero Canyon, and after the 1 969 Santa Barbara oil spill off the coast of California. Marine pollution was a major area of discussion during the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm. That year also away the signing of the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, sometimes called the London Convention. The London Convention did not ban marine pollution, but it established black and gray lists for substances to be banned (black) or regulated by national authorities (gray). Cyanide and high-level radioactive waste, for example, were put on the black list. The London Convention applied only to waste dumped from ships, and thus did nothing to regulate Waste discharged as liquids from pipelines. Chapter 2: Statement of the Problem a) General Statement of the Problem Over 80% of marine pollution comes from land-based activities. B) Specific Statement of the Problem * Direct discharge Pollutants enter rivers and the sea directly from urban sewerage and industrial waste discharges, sometimes in the form of hazardous and toxic wastes. Inland mining for copper, gold. Etc. , is another source of marine pollution. Most of the pollution is simply soil, which ends up in rivers flowing to the sea. However, some minerals discharged in the course of the mining can cause problems, such as copper, a common industrial pollutant, which can interfere with the life history and development of coral polyps. Mining has a poor environmental track record. For example, according to the united States Environmental Protection Agency, mining has contaminated portions of the headwaters of over 40% of watersheds in the western continental US. Much of this pollution finishes up in the sea. Land runoff Surface runoff from farming as well as urban runoff and runoff from the construction of roads, buildings, ports, channels, and harbors, can carry oil and particles laden with carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and minerals. This nutrient-rich water can cause fleshy algae and phytoplankton to thrive in coastal areas; known as algal blooms, which have the potential to create hypochondriacs by using all available oxygen. Polluted runoff from roads and highways can be a significant source of water pollution in coastal areas. About 75 percent of the toxic chemicals that flow into Upset Sound are carried postmaster that runs off paved roads and driveways, rooftops, yards and other developed land. * Ship pollution Ships can pollute waterways and oceans in many ways. Oil spills can have devastating effects. While being toxic to marine life, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Pass), found in crude oil, are very difficult to clean up, and last for years in the sediment and marine environment. Discharge of cargo residues from bulk carriers can pollute ports, waterways and oceans. In many instances vessels intentionally discharge illegal wastes despite foreign and domestic regulation prohibiting such actions. It has been estimated that container ships lose over 10,000 containers at sea each year (usually during storms). Ships also create noise pollution that disturbs natural lilied, and water from ballast tanks can spread harmful algae and authoritative species. Ballast water taken up at sea and released in port is a major source of unwanted exotic marine life. The invasive freshwater zebra mussels, native to the Black, Caspian and Capo Seas, Were probably transported to the Great Lakes via ballast water from a transoceanic vessel. Mines believes that one of the worst cases of a single invasive species causing harm to an ecosystem can be attributed to a seemingly harmless jellyfish. Nepotisms eyelid, a species of comb jellyfish that spread so it now inhabits estuaries in many parts of the world. It was first introduced in 1 982, and thought to have been transported to the Black Sea in a ships ballast water. The population of the jellyfish shot up exponentially and, by 1988, it was wreaking havoc upon the local fishing industry. Tenancy catch fell from 204,000 tons in 1 984 to 200 tons in 1993; sprat from 24,600 tons in 1 984 to 12,000 tons in 1 993; horse mackerel from 4,000 tons in 1 984 to zero in Now that the jellyfish have exhausted the zooplankton, including fish larvae, their numbers have fallen dramatically, yet they continue to maintain a stranglehold on the ecosystem. Invasive species can take over once occupied areas, facilitate the spread of new diseases, introduce new genetic material, alter underwater seascapes and jeopardize the ability of native species to obtain food. Invasive species are responsible for about $138 billion annually in lost revenue and management costs in the US alone. * Deep Sea Mining Deep sea mining is a relatively new mineral retrieval process that takes place on the ocean floor. Ocean mining sites are usually around large areas of politically nodules or active and extraterritoriality vents at about 1 ,400 3,700 meters below the oceans surface. The vents create sulfide deposits, which contain precious metals such as silver, gold, copper, manganese, cobalt, and zinc. The deposits are mined using either hydraulic pumps or bucket systems that take ore to the surface to be processed. As with all mining operations, deep sea mining raises questions about environmental damages to the surrounding areas Because deep sea mining is a relatively new field, the complete consequences of full scale mining operations are unknown. However, experts are certain that removal of parts of the sea floor will result in disturbances to the benthic are, increased toxicity of the water column and sediment plumes from tailings. Removing parts of the sea floor disturbs the habitat of benthic organisms, possibly, depending on the type of mining and location, causing permanent disturbances. Aside from direct impact of mining the area, leakage, spills and corrosion would alter the mining areas chemical makeup. Among the impacts of deep sea mining, sediment plumes could have the greatest impact. Plumes are caused when the tailings from mining (usually fine particles) are dumped back into the ocean, creating a cloud of particles floating in the water. Two types of plumes occur: near bottom plumes and surface plumes. Near bottom plumes occur when the tailings are pumped back down to the mining site. The floating particles increase the turbidity, or cloudiness, Of the water, clogging filter-feeding apparatuses used by benthic organisms. Surface plumes cause a more serious problem. Depending on the size of the particles and water currents the plumes could spread over vast areas. The plumes could impact zooplankton and light penetration, in turn affecting the food web of the area. * Oil Oil spills cause huge damage to the marine environment but in fact are responsible for only around of he oil entering the seas each year. According to a study by the US National Research Council, 36% comes down drains and rivers as waste and runoff from cities and industry. Fertilizers Fertilizer runoff from farms and lawns is a huge problem for coastal areas. The extra nutrients cause transportation flourishing of algal blooms that deplete the waters dissolved oxygen and suffocate other marine life. Transportation has created enormous dead zones in several parts of the world, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Baltic Sea. * Seas of Garbage Solid garbage also makes its way to the ocean. Plastic gas, balloons, glass bottles, shoe s, packaging material if not disposed of correctly, almost Everett inning we throw away can reach the sea. Plastic garbage, which decomposes very slowly, is often mistaken for food by marine animals. High concentrations of plastic material, particularly plastic bags, have been found blocking the breathing passages and stomachs of many marine species, including whales, dolphins, seals, puffins, and turtles. Plastic six-pack rings for drink bottles can also choke marine animals. This garbage can also come back to shore, where it pollutes beaches and other coastal habitats. Sewage disposal In many parts of the world, sewage flows untreated, or under-treated, into the ocean. For example, 80% of urban sewage discharged into the Mediterranean Sea is untreated. This sewage can also lead to transportation. In addition, it can cause human disease and lead to beach closures. * Toxic chemicals Almost every marine organism, from the tiniest plankton to whales and polar bears, is contaminated with man-made chemicals, such as pesticides and chemicals used in common consumer products. Some of these chemicals enter the sea through deliberate dumping. For centuries, the oceans have been a convenient dumping ground or waste generated on land. This continued until the 1 sass, with dumping at sea the accepted practice for disposal of nearly everything, including toxic material such as pesticides, chemical weapons, and radioactive waste. Dumping of the most toxic materials was banned by the London Dumping Convention in 1 972, and an amended treaty in 1996 (the London Convention) further restricted what could be dumped at sea. However, there are still the problems of already-dumped toxic material, and even the disposal of permitted substances at sea can be a substantial environmental hazard. Chemicals also enter the sea from land-based activities. Chemicals can escape into water, soil, and air during their manufacture, use, or disposal, as well as from accidental leaks or fires in products containing these chemicals. Once in the environment, they can travel for long distances in air and water, including People once assumed that the ocean was so large that all ocean currents. Laotians would be diluted and dispersed to safe levels. But in reality, they have not disappeared and some toxic man-made chemicals have even become more concentrated as they have entered the food chain. Tiny animals at the bottom of the food chain, such as plankton in the oceans, absorb the chemicals as they feed. Because they do not break down easily, the chemicals accumulate in these organisms, becoming much more concentrated in th eir bodies than in the surrounding water or soil. These organisms are eaten by small animals, and the concentration rises again. These animals are in turn eaten by larger animals, which can travel large distances with their even further increased chemical load. Animals higher up the food chain, such as seals, can have contamination levels millions of times higher than the water in which they live. And polar bears, which feed on seals, can have contamination levels up to 3 billion times higher than their people become contaminated either directly from household environment. Products or by eating contaminated seafood and animal fats. Evidence is mounting that a number of man-made chemicals can cause serious health problems including cancer, damage to the immune system, behavioral problems, and reduced fertility. Definition of Terms Transportation Excessive richness Of nutrients in a lake or other body Of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth f plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen Plankton The small and microscopic organisms drifting or floating in the sea or fresh water, consisting chiefly of diatoms, protozoans, small crustaceans, and the eggs and larval stages of larger animals. Many animals are adapted to feed on plankton, esp.. By filtering the water. Marine pollution occurs when harmful, or potentially harmful, effects result from the entry into the ocean of chemicals, particles, industrial, agricultural and residential waste, noise, or the spread of invasive organisms.
